La tournée de Taiwan 2013 : Jiufen

These yam balls and sweet potato balls in ice actually can be found in our country in outlets such as Snowflakes and Blackballs, but since we were in Taiwan, we will savour this delicacy from the place of its origin.  This bowl was served in Jiufen.  As we reached Jiufen in the afternoon after the hot Yeliu excursion, this bowl was just nice to cool us down . Jiufen was packed with people. There were also a lot of people in this shop and to be able to get a table was really a skill.

It did not taste extra nice, just that the balls were 'Q', as the Taiwanese described them.  Jiufen old street (老街) was packed with souvenir shops, fashion shops and local delicacies shops. One delicacy which we would not try even though it was the "must eat" was the  现烤臭豆腐, the grilled  rotten egg smell toufu.  The smell was pungent enough to make your head turns and you can smell it even if you were three shops away.  In Taiwan, this delicacy is very popular.  You can find it everywhere with different recipes.

After a walk through the surrounding area, it's time for dinner.  This time we visited the famous 魚丸伯仔 selling fish ball, stuffed fried toufu and  vermicelli.

There were too many types of delicacies to be found here. One would not be able to palate all the delicacies Jiufen could offer.  Away from the hustle bustle of the old street was the quiet and tranquil neighborhood.  There were many unopen art and craft shops with well decorated windows but the sellers were no where to be seen.

The locals too were hardly seen. May be they shy away from the onslaught of the visitors or was it a silent protest of their once peaceful neighborhood that had been invaded by the unstoppable modernization and the growing economic activities which fast changing the way of life.
